About
The Trail is a community-created and managed experience that will introduce you to the everyday life of the communities that surround Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary and give you an opportunity to learn about and experience Sierra Leone, with the people who make this region of the country so special... the local communities themselves. Discover South-Eastern Sierra Leone's cultural, historical and natural heritage.
Our Communities
We are eight communities surrounding Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, and we each have our own characteristics when it comes to our natural settings, cultural sites and historical facts.
We have chosen some authentic and exciting experiences to share with you when you come and visit us, and we will make sure that your stay with us will leave you with fond memories and exciting stories to take back home.
And of course, if you are looking for specific information or you want to learn about a particular aspect of our heritage, then we will be happy to try our level best to help you out.
Cultural heritage
Learn about the fascinating cultural heritage that links people to the environment in which they live. Did you know that the communities used to have a special relationship with crocodiles?
Immersive experiences
Immerse yourself in rural Mende life. Learn local customs, understand how coffee, cacao and kola nuts are grown and try your hand at speaking the Mende language.
